Kasey pleaded with me to "play" with my Cannon Power Shot the other day. How could I deny her? Gently I did my best to explain to her the basics of taking pictures and then I released her out into our backyard. One hour and 128 photos later Kasey shared with me her handy work.
Here's wishing that we all find the time to go out and take pictures with a childs eye.
There is no denying it; I have been bitten by the thrift-store-flea-market-yard-sale bug. :-)
My husband has stood back and watched with much amusement and surprise as I've come home on a weekly basis with lovely vintage items and all at a small cost. Bruce has teased me at how excited I get when I come across a real "find" not quite understanding what all the fuss is about. Then today all that changed.
While on the other side of town Bruce stopped at a shabby looking thrift store and gave thrifting a try. This is what he found...a handsome two-toned blue Smith-Corona Galaxie Twelve typewriter!! For $5, marked down from $10, he purchased the typewriter, brought it home, opened the case and asked "did I do good?" I'm positive it's the first time Bruce has ever seen me squeal with delight at being given a $5 gift! So now he's starting to get "it" or so it seems for I did overhear him on the phone with my sister this evening bragging about his awesome "find." lol
In Florida we had 2100 square feet of living space....now we have just over a 1000. This makes me laugh for I use to feel like our Florida home was small...at least compared to the "Jone's." Now, after sifting through all that we need and ALL that we do not need, I am very happy to be calling this little house a home.
In the Florida house I also always found myself decorating it like I thought it "should" be decorated. What would the neighbors think if they saw clipboard hanging on the walls?!? Now....I'm doing what feels right. I'm painting the walls bright colors, I'm tossing up art work that inspires me and yes I have a wall of clipboards (inspired by the fantastic Smile and Wave blog) hanging in the living room, each loaded with images that keep my creative spirit in gear.
The result of all this free spirited decorating...... For one, a happy family who enjoys the bright cheery atmosphere and second, surprisingly rave reviews from visitors my sister continuously brings by to show off all that I've done to the place. I'm finally beginning to feel good about my creative side.........finally. ;-)
So random are the things I seem to be finding lately! Yesterday my sister had suggested I stop by a local thrift store to search for Polaroid cameras to add to my collection so that's what I did. I found a Polaroid Sun 600....and I also found this! An absolutely BEAUTIFUL teal blue vintage sewing machine from the 1950's. It is in pristine condition and operates as if it were brand new and it is so SO very pretty! For nothing more than $10 I was able to take this dreamy colored jewel home with me. Maybe it's a sign....that now could be the perfect time to learn to sew.
The past week and a half I have spent many miles on southern Indiana roads stopping at rummage sales, barn sales and a handful of antique malls. I've gathered a collection of pretty finds ranging from retro Aladdin thermoses, antique typewriters all the way to vintage cameras, many of which are Polaroids. The last day out I came across a small antique shop in a place called Gnaw Bone Indiana and that is where I met this Kodak Reflex 1A camera and it was love at first sight. It's in fantastic condition, and needed very little cleaning inside or out. Already I have found a camera store in downtown Indianapolis that still sells and processes 120 film which I have bought and modified to fit the camera which originally takes 620.
I haven't been this excited about shooting since I received my SX-70 earlier this year. Bringing these vintage cameras to life is really thrilling and I can not wait to share with you the images from this Reflex in the days to come.

They're going fast now, these last days of summer. Leaves are changing shades of green, hinting at the hidden colors yet to come. Cool days are now outnumbering the hot ones and hoodies are hanging by the backdoor already needed to ease the chill of early mornings. Today when Kasey jumps in sister's pool I'll be wondering, is this our last day of summer....
Behind a mahogany steering wheel, deep in a black leather seat, peering up over a long safari yellow hood that cuts into the horizon ahead. A 350hp 327 engine roars to life with the slightest push of my sole against the accelerator and fills me with utmost joy, clearing my mind as completely as any meditation. It has been a tough week to keep up with but the little daily drives in the 68 have come to feel therapeutic and have helped me to keep my focus on the positives that lay ahead. I can not thank my dad enough for entrusting this car to me and I know it will break my heart when I have to give it back. But until then....I will just have to enjoy every drive.
